Frequently asked questions.
Everything worth knowing about Curtyn. If your question is not here, reach out and we will be happy to help.
What is Curtyn?
Curtyn is one workspace for video and photo productions. You build a project, add the tools you need (scriptwriter, breakdown, shotlist, storyboard, budget, schedule and more), and your crew and collaborators work in it alongside you in real time. When it is time to hand something over, you export a clean PDF.
Who is Curtyn for?
Curtyn is built for freelance creatives, small studios, and production companies. Think videographers, photographers, designers, and creative agencies. If you work with clients and need a clean way to plan a production, collaborate in real time, and export it as a polished PDF, Curtyn is for you.
Is Curtyn available right now?
Yes. Curtyn is in open beta and free to use. Sign up and start planning your production today. We are still refining the experience and shipping improvements constantly, so expect it to keep getting better.
How do I get started?
Just sign up. Open beta is free and open to everyone, no invite needed. Create an account from any Start free button and you are in.
Can my team work in a project together?
Yes. On the free tier you can invite up to five people to a project, and you choose which tools each person opens. Writing seats, where several people edit the same script at once with each other's cursors visible, arrive with Curtyn Pro.
How do I get work out of Curtyn to send to a client?
Export it as a PDF. Any tool (shotlist, schedule, budget, script, storyboard and more) exports to a clean, print-ready PDF that matches what you see on screen. Lists like cast and crew also export to CSV.
Do the people I send a PDF to need an account?
No. A PDF is just a file. You download it and send it however works best for you: email, WhatsApp, Slack, anything. Anyone can open it on any device, with no Curtyn account.
Does the export look the same as what I built?
Yes. The PDF is rendered from the same layout you work in, so a shotlist reads like your shotlist and a schedule reads like your schedule, ready to print or hand over.
What tools are available right now?
Ten tools, each built to do the whole job. A scriptwriter, script breakdown, a script view that opens your script beside any other tool, shotlist, storyboard, canvas, cast and crew lists, budget, locations, shooting schedule, and call sheets. Alongside them: equipment, a slideshow, a rich text editor and file storage. Invoicing, contracts and a few others are in development.
What video formats are supported?
Curtyn handles all the common video formats (MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI and MKV), along with professional formats like ProRes and MXF. After upload, large videos are transcoded on our servers so they stream smoothly for everyone on the project.
Is the scriptwriter really collaborative?
It is built for it. Several writers can work on the same script at once and see each other's cursors and changes in real time, so everyone is always on the current draft with no versions to merge or email around. Writing seats for the room arrive with Curtyn Pro. On free you can share the script read-only.
What features are coming next?
We are working on invoicing, e-signatures and contracts, time tracking, team chat, and analytics. Check the features page for the full breakdown of what is live today and what is on the way.
Will there be invoicing?
Yes. Invoicing is one of the features we are building. It will include line items, VAT support, and online payment links.
Will there be e-signatures?
Yes. Contracts with e-signatures are in development. You will be able to create contracts, add signers, and let people sign directly in Curtyn with a full audit trail.
Will I be able to use my own branding?
Yes, you already can. Add your logo to the PDFs you export. More branding controls are on the way.
Is there a free tier?
Yes. The free tier lets you run one of your own projects plus three you have been invited to. It includes 2 GB of storage, every tool with one of each per project, and up to five people you invite to view it. It is a real free tier, not a time-limited trial.
How much does Curtyn Pro cost?
Curtyn Pro is still in development. We have not announced a price yet. If you want to know the moment Pro is ready, drop your email on the pricing page and we will reach out.
What will Curtyn Pro include?
We are building on what is in Curtyn today to make collaboration on video productions more capable. We are not sharing a dated feature list yet, but you can join the waitlist on the pricing page to hear it first.
Where is my data stored?
Curtyn uses Supabase with PostgreSQL for data storage and cloud storage for files and videos. Your data is backed up regularly and stored securely.
Is Curtyn mobile-friendly?
The workspace is built for desktop and works well on tablets, with an on-set capture mode for phones. Any PDF you export opens on any device with a browser.
